RAILROAD MUSEUMS

Click on the logo or word links below in order to connect to interesting North Carolina Railroad Museums.

Charlotte Trolley has several restored trolley cars. Operations have been suspended during the construction of Charlotte Light Rail.

The Lancaster & Chester Railway is a privately owned, well-capitalized, financially strong, short line railroad based in Lancaster, South Carolina, 35 miles south of Charlotte, NC. They provide customized, competitive rail freight service for their customers and connect them to the national rail network through both CSXT and Norfolk Southern.

The railroad also has a museum located on the property. The highlight of the museum is a scale model replica of the original 29-mile route of the L&C. The railroad enthusiasts have taken on the responsibility of making exact replicas of every building and facility on the route, plus shrubs, trees and bodies of water.

There is a museum in the old Cherryville train depot. It is at 105 Depot Street in Cherryville and is open Saturdays: 10 am - 2 pm. There are several operating layouts in the freight room, also.

East Carolina Chapter, NRHS and New Hope Valley Railway operates several diesel locomotives on 6.5 miles of track.

The Great Smokey Mountain RR runs diesel and steam excursions.

The NC Transportation Museum covers many forms of transportation but railroads are primary focus, including rides and lots of equipment.

The Tweetsie Railroad offers a trip back into the days of the Old West on a 3 mile journey behind steam.

The Wilmington Railroad Museum has both model and prototype equipment on exhibit.

The South Carolina Railroad Museum has a good sized selection of railroad equipment including locomotives, freight, passenger and MW cars. Train rides are scheduled twice a month from June thru October.
