The Piedmont &Western is a coal-hauling bridge line, joining Huntington, WV and Charlotte, NC. It has about 600 real ft of mainline, 12 towns, 3 yards. Coal is hauled from 5 major mines to 2 power plants. The railroad is set in the early fifties, with a mix of steam and diesel.

Jack uses a Digitrax® Chief DCC system. Operation is by card order and takes place the first Saturday evening of each month.  Operations requires 12-18 people. Visiting engineers always welcome.

The Piedmont Central Round Robin

bullet

Charlotte, North Carolina

The Piedmont Central is the oldest club in the Charlotte area. For many years it had limited membership due to meeting space capacity. As a result the "Charlotte Second Section" club was formed, but that organization has now been re-assimilated into the Piedmont Central. The original meeting about forming the Carolina Southern Division of the NMRA  was held at a Piedmont Central meeting. Round Robin refers to the fact that the members always meet at a different place each month.
Bob Carter is the keeper of the membership list. He sends out monthly notices to the membership with directions and meeting date/times. The dues of $5 per year cover the mailing costs.

Metrolina Model Railroaders, Inc.

bullet

Belmont, North Carolina

The Metrolina Model Railroaders were formed in 1980 with the intent of building a permanent HO scale layout, which they did several times as they moved from buildings in Charlotte to Belmont where they stayed in one location for 13 years. The club currently does not have a permanent home, but has built an HO scale modular layout that is displayed at the Southern Christmas Show in Charlotte and at other shows.
The modular layout is the work of about 15 people over a period of years. While the scenery represents the 1950's, members are free to operate any equipment they wish. There are photographs of this layout on the Club's web site.
The club's layouts are HO scale but many members also model other scales.
For more information contact the club by Email or visit their website.

HO and O Scales

The Club is located in the old Seaboard Air Line Depot in Cherryville, which is located on the CSX line from Charlotte to Bostic at milepost SF 371.42. CSX has a radio repeater and tower on site (frequencies 160.590 and 161.520). The club is currently restoring the Depot to look just as it did when in operation in the early 1900's. The loading platform will also be rebuilt to enable train watching and picture taking.   An O Scale layout and an enlarged HO layout are currently under construction in the warehouse, as is a 2-track G scale layout that will hang from the rafters. An N Scale diorama of the Seaboard Air Line train wreck on July 13, 1966 that occurred in Cherryville will be constructed. This wreck destroyed 6 engines and killed an engineer.

There is a museum in the Depot, located in the old waiting rooms. The Club meets every Thursday night at 7:30pm. There is an open house each Saturday from 10:00am – 2:00pm.

The Knight Bros & Dad Railroad is modeled on the Norfolk Southern's "S LINE" running from Spencer to Asheville. The HO layout is on three levels in a 24x24 ft garage. It is set in the "modern era" and features a variety of mixed freight, wood chip and coal unit trains running between Tennessee and the Linwood Yard (both represented in storage yards) over the "S Line."

The Monday Night Irregulars operate the layout each Monday night from 7 to 10 PM.  The railroad is located at Rick's home just west of Birkdale, off Exit 25 of I-77.  An Ideal crew is 8-10 and newcomers are always welcome. Directions are here.

The Piedmont and Western Railroad

bullet

Valdese, NC

The Piedmont and Western Railroad is a fictitious line serving Western North Carolina whose mainline extends from Marion, NC to Leadvale, TN. Its chief purpose is to carry the trains of its owners, Southern RR and the Clinchfield RR across the Blue Ridge Mountains. Since it is the only Carolina's mainline that crosses the Blue Ridge, traffic is heavy. The Piedmont and Western also maintains extensive terminal facilities in Asheville, which is the focus of operations. Trains set off or pick up local traffic, or are reclassified for their final destinations. Modern operations with diesel locomotives are emphasized.
The HO Scale Club was formed in July 1988 in the city of Valdese, North Carolina.
The club was Incorporated in November of that year and commenced construction of the layout in January of 1989. The layout is almost 1400 square feet (130 sq. meters) in area, with workshop, storage and railroad museum in adjacent rooms. The mainline is mostly single track to increase operating interest, and is approximately 250 feet (76 meters) long with total trackage well over 1000 feet (305 meters). The  Easy DCC ®   control system is used. Currently 16-20 locomotives and almost 200 freight and passenger cars are in use.
During 2004, construction began on the "Murphy Branch" extension which is in the adjacent room of 600+ sq. ft. The "Murphy Branch" will include the Graham County Rwy.
Construction also began for our railroad museum displays which are now nearing completion.
The Club's activities focus on Tuesday and Thursday nights, with monthly business meetings on the first Thursday and operating sessions on the fourth Thursday. Informal viewing can be arranged in advance for the latter. Their website is http://www.pwrr.org . Photos of the CSD visit to the club in Feb 07 are here.
