Ed models the Norfolk Southern and Southern Railway between Charlotte and Salisbury, NC, during the years after the NS merger between N&W and Southern. Ed reports "I've stretched the years to include many of the heavy new power seen today only because I like that new power but I still operate Southern equipment as well. Amtrak has a showing along with other equipment currently calling at the Charlotte station." Ed's layout is entirely DCC using the Digitrax Empire Builder and mostly TCS decoders. For more photos of Ed's layout as of May 2006, click here.
Gerry Adelman's Chicago, Washington & Charlotte Gerry is undertaking an ambitious layout construction in the form of a large 'E' in a 25 ft by 25 ft room. The photos below show his progress with the outer wings of the 'E'. The middle island will be constructed for the Washington station with an 8 track stub terminal. The photo of the back of the layout shows the included commuter line. Gerry is using DCC and recent operations had five engines operating on the available single track line. For updated photos of Gerry's layout as of May 2006, click here.
On his former layout, Larry modeled a portion of the Illinois Central from Chicago to Ft. Dodge. Cities included along the route were Rockford, Dubuque and Lynnville. Lynnville was a town named after Larry's wife. The industries were also named after Larry's children and grandchildren. Larry's Illinois Central was controlled by Digitrax DCC and was host to a monthly operating session. Photos courtesy of Mike Boyle.
The D & S has been my railroad name since I was in high school. For the
past 15 years it has occupied a room in my home that is about 10' x 10'.
Built on 3 levels, a train running at normal mountain railway scale speeds,
can take as long as 30 minutes to go out & back.
The D&S shares trackage with the B&O railroad. I grew up on the B&O in
W.VA., but since the B&O owned very little Alco power, I have made the
D&S an all Alco railway.
The D&S is really a joint-venture with Dave & Michele Chance. I own the
railroad, but without the Chance's help, might never have accomplished
much.
Digitrax DCC is used to control the system. Up to 3 operators can run
trains at the same time.
An open invitation: Generally we have operating sessions on Friday. If you
would like to tour the layout, contact me at
The Knight Bros & Dad Railroad is modeled on the Norfolk Southern's "S LINE" running from Spencer to Asheville. The HO layout is on three levels in a 24x24 ft garage. It is set in the "modern era" and features a variety of mixed freight, wood chip and coal unit trains running between Tennessee and the Linwood Yard (both represented in storage yards) over the "S Line." The Monday Night Irregulars operate the layout each Monday night from 7 to 10 PM. The railroad is located at Rick's home just west of Birkdale, off Exit 25 of I-77. An Ideal crew is 8-10 and newcomers are always welcome. Directions are here.

The late 19th century was an active period in Ohio’s early railroad history. Through several incorporations, foreclosures, reorganizations, and consolidations a narrow gauge railroad line from near Youngstown, OH, was extended to Alliance, OH. This line was converted to standard gauge and extended to Bergholz, OH, by 1880. The Lake Erie, Alliance & Wheeling was incorporated in1901 and the line was extended to Dillonvale, OH, by the next year. This line was profitable due to its coal resources and was acquired by the Lake Shore & Michigan Southern Railway Co. in 1902 during its expansion along the southern shore of Lake Erie. The New York Central and Hudson River Railroad merged with the LS&MS in 1914 to form the New York Central System. The industrial needs for coal during WWI allowed for improvements to the line with the creation of a hump yard and scales at Minerva, OH, in 1917. This line transported coal from mostly strip mine fed tipples into the 1960’s. The last two mines ceased regular operations in the late 1970’s and the line was sold to Ohi-Rail in 1982. My modeling efforts have been to recreate the line from my hometown of Minerva, OH, south to the termination at Dillonvale, OH, in the middle to late 1960s. I used my “modeler’s license” to extend the line geographically south to St Clairsville, OH, and then into south staging representing the southern junction meeting the Toledo & Ohio Central line near Corning, OH, between Columbus and Gallipolis, OH, to justify more through freight traffic. My HO scale basement railroad occupies approximately 420 sq. ft. which is built on three levels. The single track mainline stretches 260 ft between staging yards. I have chosen to maintain the mining activity from various tipples although their activity may have ceased prior to my modeled time period. The yard at Minerva dispatches four mine runs and a local serving industry to towns south of Minerva. The yard at Piney Fork is another point from which a local departs to Dillonvale. In the town of St. Clairsville I have created industry including a steel mill. Through freights make pick ups and set outs at Minerva, Piney Fork, and St. Clairsville. Other through freights may run over the railroad as time permits. The railroad operates with a Dispatcher, a yard master at Minerva, a full time switching job at St. Clairsville, and four road engineers. Car cards are used to direct movements following a sequenced itinerary. Control of the layout is with radio Digitrax DCC. Some locomotives are sound equipped. I run four axle diesels for routine power but a few steam engines are kept on the property for nostalgia. Scenery is just beginning and is only 15% completed.
