NOVEMBER 15, 2008
MEETING REPORT
On November 15, 2008 we gathered at the Brookford Town Center. Prior to the
meeting, several of our members participated in a special work session at Wade's Train Town.
After successfully completing a number of projects,
we moved to a nearby conference room for a meeting. Minutes of the meeting are
here.

Before the meeting, Ed Locklin, Dave Chance, Michelle Chance and Joe Howard
joined Gil Brauch and Michael Lethcoe in a special work session on the Train
Town Layout.

As meeting time neared, more members showed up and viewed progress on the
layout.

The meeting opened with a "change of command" between Rick Knight and Steve

Superintendent's Notes - Carolina Southern Division
Meeting
Saturday, November 15, 2008
CALL TO ORDER:
Rick Knight – Superintendent – opened the meeting and called it to order.
He then resigned from the superintendent’s position. Per the by-laws of the
Division the Asst. Superintendent automatically moves up.
Steve August – new Superintendent assumed the chair for the rest of the meeting.
REPORTS:
SUPERINTENDENT: RICK KNIGHT
CLERK: JACK HAYNES – Not available no report.
PAYMASTER: DICK BRONSON
The division continues to have a modest positive cash balance with little or no
outstanding obligations. Details can be made available by contacting the
Paymaster directly.
WEBMASTER: GIL BRAUCH
Gil’s report consisted of a short discussion on the web page. He inquired as to
any changes that should be made. Everyone was in favor of a great job that Gil
had done. Steve August had inquired upon updating the web page to a more modern
look. The look of the web page was explained.
An offer to change the web address of the webpage to “carolinasouthern.org” was
made by Steve August. This met with overwhelming approval. This will be
reviewed again at the upcoming Division Officers Meeting in December.
ACHIEVEMENT PROGRAM: DAVE CHANCE
The achievement program update from Dave Chance was the awarding of Jim Allen’s
Electrical Award. Dave also offered to do a short clinic on the Achievement
Program at an upcoming meeting. He also advised of several other people who are
working on other certificates.
WADE’S TRAIN TOWN: Gil Brauch
Preliminary Report on the Brookford Project: As of November 14, 2008

We have held 10 open houses for a total of approximately 548 visitors
●
Restoration has encompassed about one half of the layout
▪
The residential area and carnival are complete, including lights
▪
The downtown area is 75 % complete
▪
The outside mainline is 66% ballasted
●
So far this year, nine persons have put in 405 manhours of restoration
work
▪
Three persons have contributed 88% of this level of effort
●
Since the project began, 31 persons have put in at least 1 hour working
on the project
▪
Many of these have not worked since 2006
▪
Six persons worked in 2007
▪
Nine persons worked in 2008
▪
Total hours worked are approximately 1,498
●
Cash donations have been approximately $850 over the two years we have
held open houses
▪
All of this, except about $13 has been expended on materials and supplies
▪
We have outstanding obligations for approximately $90 for materials and
supplies purchased, but not reimbursed
●
We will hold only one more work session and one more open house this year
▪
No work sessions on Thanksgiving and Christmas
▪
Work session on December 11th
▪
Open house on December 13th
▪
First work session in 2009 is on January 8th
OLD BUSINESS:
There was no old business discussed.
NEW BUSINESS:
NOMINATION OF DIRECTOR –
Fred Miller was re-nominated as Director 2012. The remaining Directors will
meet and advise if there are any other candidates for the position.
CALENDAR 2008 –
Open House: PIEDMONT & WESTERN (JACK PARKER): DEC 6th, 1:00 – 5:00 PM
Open House: KNIGHT BROS. & DAD (RICK KNIGHT): DEC 6th,
1:00 – 5:00 PM
CALENDAR 2009 –
Steve August made his report as new superintendent and advised of several big
ideas that would be discussed at meeting in the future. He also expressed that
he would like to see more people get involved in the division.
IDEAS –
The next MRU Session will be in February or March: Joe Howard and Roy Becker
are looking into possibilities for dates.
I-77 Layout Tour for the
Division: this would be a way for others to see a lot of other layouts in the
division. Several people getting close to having layouts ready.
OpSession Weekend: A
letter has been written to be sent to numerous layouts in the Division to gauge
the willingness of the OpSession Weekend. More information will follow on this
subject.
