2008 NATIONAL N
SCALE CONVENTION
"Derby City Express"
Featuring the World's Largest N Scale Layout
Introduction
The Kentuckiana Society of
N Scalers and the N Scale Collector Society hosted the 2008 National N Scale
Convention in Louisville, KY on June 26-29, 2008. A highlight of the
convention was the assembling of the World's Largest N Scale Layout. One
of our members, Gil Brauch - who is also a member of the
Central Carolina N Scalers, attended the convention and had two of his
modules included in the layout.
Gil also took photos of all of the modules in the layout
and shares them with us here. The overall plan for the layout shown below gives
you the general orientation. The layout covered over 50,000 sqft and contained
over 700 modules. The total Red Line Route mileage around the perimeter of the
eight loops was over 116 scale miles (over 3,800 actual feet). Note that there
are eight loops in the overall plan. Also note that some of the loops are really
peninsulas with return loop modules at the ends. To go around the whole layout,
you had to traverse the modules on these peninsula loops twice (once each out
and back). All loops are connected at the center so that it was possible to run
a train all the way around.

The photo galleries on this page walk you around each of the
loops. There is a photo of each of the modules in each loop, except for lift
bridges and duck-unders. Most yards are represented only by their throat tracks.
Apologies in advance for any modules that may have been omitted.
Each loop has it's own PDF slideshow. You need to have Adobe
Reader installed to view the shows. Be advised in advance that
the slideshows are very large files. The size of the file is
shown below the active link to it below. The reason the files are so large is
that there are over 80 photos in each one. For our dial-up users, I apologize in
advance, but these files are the best I could do without compromising the
quality of the representation of the modules.
Click on the link below to start the show for that loop.
Left-click on the image to advance to the next slide. Right-click to go back.
You will know when you have finished the loop, as clicking on the last slide
will no longer advance the show. When you are finished with a particular slide
show, use the back button on your browser to return to this
page.
